I get that all the time regarding soapmaking and even veg gardening or just about making a cake or bread from scratch. I think too many people are not teaching themsselves things THEN actually doing something with the knowledge. A lot of what many people DO is work for a paycheck then do things for entertainment. They don't do projects that are internally driven and independently achieved. They do things just by external force or pressure or because they "have to".

I couldn't agree more! In the last few years I gave taught myself to bake. And I love it! It is so wonderful to spend several hours baking or sewing (or general doing) for those you care about. There is someone in my life (I won't say who) that is a little put out that I am frequently asked to bake for get togethers and such. This past week she insisted she would bake. She made a cake from a box (not even any alterations/additions) and icing from a can...and she doesn't get the difference. We are an instant gratification culture and to many fail to even see what I being lost because of it.
