Ukrainian Eggs We Made

I was 16 years old the last time I took a Ukrainian Egg making class. I can still remember attending with my mother and aunt and making the detailed eggs. We all had a blast. My mother and aunt are amateur artists so that workshop was taken seriously yet we had fun chatting while we worked.

When I saw the offer made to homeschoolers in my area to take a workshop given by a homeschooling mother I jumped at the chance. I knew my boys would love the process. (There was no age restriction so) I signed up for it myself as well, not wanting to miss out on the fun, and so I could re-learn the technique so we could go on to do this at home. (This is also another good reason to be linked with a local homeschool support network so you can find out about such offerings. This one was offered via a local email discussion group.)

The workshop was structured. We all made the same egg with the same colors so we could concentrate on the technique rather than worry about picking a design. The design was sketched on with a pencil by the teacher for less risk of error. We also had a short lesson about the Ukraine and about the history and symbolism of the Ukrainian Easter Eggs.

I was happy to see that both of the other families there had boys taking the class, so it was actually four boys to two girls and two adult women. (I'd worried if my boys would be the only ones there as my younger son is in that phase of worrying too much about what a stranger may think of him.)

These are the eggs we made in the workshop last week.

Today we will be making our own at home using the same technique but with non-traditional designs.

Happy Easter!

These are great. The detail is amazing. Also takes me back to my trip through the Ukraine and Crimea as a teen.
