Three Sequel Books My Boys Are Elated About This Week

I found out about all three of these sequels either before or shortly after their release. This amazes me because I have a circle of friends whose kids read these books and they didn't know of these releases either. Also I'm on homeschool chat lists and no one has mentioned these. So thank you to Amazon for pointing the releases out to me.

------

Last night we arrived home to find UPS had delivered the latest installment in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. This is being marketed as a children's book but it was originally a comic about a kid to be read by adults. This is a graphic novel, a story told in comic format (one story for the whole book not comic strips). You can read my thoughts on this book series in this former blog post of mine. I have not read this latest book yet. For whatever reason my nine year old son loves these while my twelve year old son just likes them.

Title: Dog Days (book 4)
Series: Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Author: Jeff Kinney
Genre: realistic fiction in graphic novel format, humor
Release Date: 10/12/2009

(Note: Kinney also published a book that inspires kids to write in the book to produce their own graphic book style journal. I'm not counting that as one in the series as it is not a regular story. I call it a go-along book or a 'tie-in' but perhaps the publishing industry has an official term for it that I don't know about.)

Just now UPS delivered more books. The homeschool lessons have been suspended in order to dedicate time to reading these books immediately. While I wish the kids would get their lessons in other subjects done today I am so elated to see their joy of reading books that I'm granting them this time to savor the writing of their favorite authors. That is my gift to my children today. Perhaps if UPS delivers some of the books I ordered for myself in the last couple of days I'll grant myself this same pleasure.

My twelve year old proclaims his new favorite fantasy genre series is the Septimus Heap series. He began reading these when he was eleven years old. As of today there are five books in the series.

Title: Syren (book 5)
Series: Septimus Heap
Author: Angie Sage
Genre: fantasy, juvenile literature ages 9-12
Release date: 9/29/2009

Another much-loved series which keeps my twelve year old up late at night and rivoted to the page is the Mysterious Benedict Society series which I guess is mystery with a twist of fantasy. Kids on the good side have to save the world from evil.

Title: The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma (book 3)
Series: The Mysterious Benedict Society
Author: Trenton Lee Stewart
Genre: juvenile fiction ages 9-12, fantasy, mystery
Release date: 10/06/2009

Disclosure: To comply with a new U.S. federal law I will share I have NOT received any payment for mentioning these products on my blog. I have purchased these books for my family's use.
